What are the common causes of a sewer line backup?

Common causes of a sewer line backup include intruding tree roots, grease buildup, flushed wipes or debris, and damaged or sagging pipes that restrict flow. Most backups start when waste can’t move freely or when the pipe wall is compromised, and they often show up first at the lowest drain in the home. We use camera inspections to find the exact problem and apply the right fix, from hydro-jetting for heavy buildup to trenchless repair when the pipe is damaged. We resolve these problems every week for homeowners across the McKinney area.

Watch for clear triggers:

  • Tree roots entering joints or cracks
  • Grease, soap scum, or scale narrowing the pipe
  • Wipes, hygiene items, or foreign objects
  • Pipe bellies, offsets, or collapses
  • Recurrent clogs after snaking the same line

If a backup returns to the same fixture after a recent clearing, the main line may have a low spot (a “belly”) that holds waste. If sewage is backing up into a tub or floor drain, stop water use and call a licensed plumber immediately.
