Why Is My AC Running But Not Cooling The House?

An AC that runs but isn’t cooling usually points to lost airflow, a refrigerant issue, or a control/electrical fault. The most common culprit is a blocked filter or dirty coils reducing heat transfer. Other causes include low refrigerant from a leak, a clogged condensate switch shutting cooling off, outdoor condenser blocked by debris, or a mis-set thermostat. A thermostat set to “On” can trick you because the fan blows constantly even when the AC isn’t cooling. We service many systems like this across DFW, including Mesquite homes during peak heat.

Try these quick checks before you call:

  • Replace a dirty air filter and set the thermostat to Auto.
  • Clear 2 feet of space around the outdoor unit and rinse coils gently.
  • Look for ice on refrigerant lines or water by the indoor unit.
  • Verify breakers aren’t tripped and supply vents aren’t blocked.

Turn the system off if you see ice on the refrigerant line to prevent compressor damage.
